The Senator – one of Jersey’s most prominent political figures – is disillusioned with the direction in which Island politics is heading.
He says that at the age of 41 he needs more financial security than a seat in the States provides.
He topped the poll at the last two Senatorial elections and his term does not run out until 2011, but Senator Syvret says that he might vacate his seat in two years time.
If he remains in the States Senator Syvret says that he will never again be a candidate for Chief Minister, because his brand of left-wing politics does not fit with the prevailing ideology of the House.
He lost the contest to become the first Chief Minister in Jersey’s history just over a year ago, when Members backed Senator Frank Walker over him by 38 votes to 14.
‘In theory I have at least another five years to do, but the next elections are in two years time, and I might step down then,’ said the Senator.
‘I could be doing something with my life to generate some kind of security for myself.
I have been in the States since the age of 25, and I have got nothing to show for it.
No business, no assets, not so much as a rudimentary occupational pension.’
