More than 5,600 vehicles have been stopped and 150 people have been breathalised during the Christmas campaign run by States of Jersey police and the honorary police.

Road checks have been taking place all over the Island since the beginning of December and of the 21 drivers arrested, ten have been put forward for prosecution.

This year the police have placed bunches of flowers beside main roads to remind drivers that drink-driving can cost lives.

P Insp Sara Garwood, who is leading the Christmas anti-drink-drive campaign, said: ‘We have had very good support from drivers this year, and many of the motorists we stop are very complimentary about the campaign.

‘The anti-drink-drive message is definitely getting through, but as these arrests show, there are still some drivers on Jersey’s roads who believe that the message not to drink and drive does not apply to them.

‘Our campaign continues until the end of December and we conduct road checks throughout the year.

We urge all drivers to take heed of the message not to drink and drive as the festive season continues.
