An inquest into Mr Fernandes’s death opened this morning.

A post-mortem revealed that he died from multiple injuries and the police said that there were no suspicious circumstances.

Born in Portugal, Mr Fernandes had lived in the Island for six years and was employed as a driver.

Emergency services rushed to the area after being alerted by the crew of the Commodore Clipper, who had sighted the Volkswagen Lupo at the foot of the cliffs.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen or spoken to Mr Fernandes on Sunday night or Monday morning, or anyone who saw the red Lupo in the Noirmont area at that time, to contact them.
