With Christmas falling on Monday, Islanders are expected to take full advantage of tomorrow and Sunday to do their last-minute shopping.
Retailers believe that the late surge, which has been reflected across the British Isles, has been caused by the full weekend before the big day.
But the weather has also played its part.
After the downpours of early December, this week’s blue skies and wintry chill have prompted thousands of shoppers to hit the high street.
Ray Shead, who chairs the retail committee of the Chamber of Commerce, said that it was probably the first time that Islanders had enjoyed such a period of uninterrupted shopping in the days before Christmas.
‘This weekend has the potential to be extremely busy as shoppers make full use of the shops being open on both days.
Retailers are quietly optimistic this year, as trading is as good as last year with a full weekend still to go.’
