Some houses were without electricity for well over two hours following an explosion and fire at a Mont Cochon sub-station that caused £100,000 worth of damage.

An internal insulation failure on an 11,000-volt switch resulted in an explosion at about 9.30 pm, causing massive damage to the unmanned brick building.

Safety features across the network kicked in and closed many of the electricity 600 sub-stations around Jersey, leaving thousands of people sitting in darkness staring at blank television screens.
