Some Islanders spent the night queuing outside St Helier shops – with clothing store Next opening at 5 am.

A witness described scenes outside the shop as ‘pandemonium’ this morning as shoppers who had waited most of the night jostled for position in the queues.

Other described the influx of customers as a ‘stampede’ when the de Gruchy’s department store opened at 10 am today.

The traditional sales, which in the UK often begin on Boxing Day, have seen some stores slash their prices by more than 50 per cent.
