The courses will include support from a nurse adviser with the inclusion of free nicotine patches or gum, or in some cases the anti-craving drug Zyban.
The ban, due to come into place at 4 am on Tuesday 2 January, has been described by Medical Officer of Health Dr Rosemary Geller as a momentous piece of social legislation.
To support people to give up an addiction to nicotine, Health and Social Services are launching the free service – with a budget for 2007 of £450,000.
Five staff, including four qualified nurses, have been taken on for the programme.
