ONE of St Helier’s busiest venues is under new management.
Mark Lockley (34) took over the reins at La Cala in December. The restaurant, nightclub and bar was bought by Randalls last year. Before joining La Cala, Mr Lockley was general manager of the 2,000 capacity Synergy nightclub in Warrington, owned by Nexum Leisure, where he organised nights featuring X Factor stars as well as the dance and Radio One DJ Judge Jules.
This is not the first time that Mr Lockley – who originates from Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria – has worked in the Island. Four years ago he had a two-year stint as deputy manager of The Bar. He then moved within the Luminar portfolio to the massive Oceana nightclub in Kingston and then to Nottingham, before he left the company to join Synergy.
‘I’ve been working my way up,’ explained Mr Lockley. ‘I worked as a barman on a Cunard cruise ship for two years, and I also worked as a barman at a club in Sydney, where I served Kylie Minogue and Keanu Reeves. In England it is quite hard at the moment. Because of the economic situation, clubs over there are really busy simply because everybody is offering discounted drinks,’ said Mr Lockley. ‘Jersey is not going down that route, which means you have to attract customers for other reasons, making it much more of a challenge.’
