Opinion is divided on this tree, too

From Anne Barnes.

RE Paula Thelwell’s article ‘Woodman spare that tree’ (JEP, 15 January), in which she quotes William Blake’s summing up of divided opinion on trees: ‘The tree that moves some people to tears of joy is, in the eyes of others, only a green thing that stands in the way’.

This quote could surely apply to the beautiful, healthy tree that was sliced in half lengthways recently, because some of the male members of an Island golf club found that the branches were interfering with their golf expertise. It looks very unstable now and will no doubt come down in our next severe storm, if it doesn’t die first!
