Liberation Day? ‘Make it a full week’

JERSEY’S one-day celebration marking the Island’s Liberation from German Occupation should be turned onto a one-week event, Education Minister James Reed has proposed.

Deputy Reed believes that Liberation Day, celebrated every year on 9 May, should be increased to a week-long experience – called Jersey Week – to celebrate the Island and its community. But he says it could just as easily be a week during the Battle of Flowers.

‘I am mindful of the fact that I would not want to detract from Liberation Day and I am aware that more discussion is needed,’ he said. ‘I would not want to diminish the importance of Liberation Day. Jersey Week could just as easily be during the Battle of Flowers.’

He said that the idea was first raised by Deputy Carolyn Labey when she was the assistant minister responsible for culture. ‘It was one of the ideas that originated from Carolyn, which was to look at creating a Jersey Week that would promote all different aspects of Island life,’ said Deputy Reed.
