Traders are asked to band together to beat crime

TRADERS are being urged to join a new committee to help deter shoplifters and make retailers feel safer.

The committee is being launched by town centre manager Richard Mackenzie as part of the Shop Watch scheme, which already has over 20 shops linked by radios so that they can warn each other about shoplifters.

The committee would meet once a month to discuss problems like persistent shoplifters or other retail issues.

Mr Mackenzie said: ‘I think every town needs a Shop Watch committee. St Helier is a safe and secure place to shop in, but we want to make sure everyone is aware and getting regular updates. During my visits to retailers, something like this has been seen as a high priority by everyone.

‘I think that the perception of the problem of crime is actually worse than the reality, but a secure and crime-free town centre is what we all want to aspire to achieve in St Helier.’
