Darwin on a stamp? Yes, and Sir David too

From Christopher Davey.

I AM entirely in support of Michael de Petrovsky’s letter (JEP, 11 February) urging that we wind down just a little from this relentless churning-out of stamps featuring our Royals, and come up with some fresh ideas.

A series celebrating Charles Darwin would be an excellent start, with images such as himself with his historic work ‘The Origin of Species’; his ship the Beagle; the Galapagos Islands; the Tree of Life; Gregor Mendel; Francis Crick, James Watson and the double helix; and even maybe Sir David Attenborough himself, to acknowledge how this great broadcaster has brought the subject to a worldwide audience.

At the same time, in these days where folk are so touchy when it comes to their religious convictions, we have, of course, also to be oh so careful. For example, who would have thought that a stamp on a letter to the United States could cause offence?

Some 60% of practising Christians in the US, including their former president, apparently, are now fully signed-up Creationists — that is, they believe their Bible, word for word, and think that the world was created in seven days in 4004 BC, and that man cavorted with dinosaurs. All part of the diversity of life, one must suppose.
