PLANS to develop Westmount Quarry into flats, sheltered homes and community buildings have been approved by Environment Minister Freddie Cohen.

Developers Dandara plan to build 196 flats, 16 sheltered apartments, a 60-bedroom nursing home and 60-bedroom pre-school nursery at the former parish depot and disused quarry.

Senator Cohen announced his decision to approve the scheme during his speech at the Institute of Directors lunch yesterday.

The plans, by architect Sir Richard McCormack and local firm Axis Mason, consist of four blocks of nine to 13 storeys. The plans also include ground-floor artists’ studios and parking for 281 cars.

As part of the application, Dandara would improve the Jewish cemetery, provide residential amenity spaces and regrade, stabilise and replant the quarry faces.
