A NEW electric car that is designed to bring a breath of fresh air to the streets has arrived in the Island.
Costing just £1.70 for a full recharge worth 70 miles, the electric drive made by Smart boasts zero carbon emissions and is being tested by staff at Jersey Electricity, who will have five cars, and local carbon trading business Ice Cap, who will have one.
The four-year trial, run across parts of the British Isles, will help Smart’s manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz, develop the car and assess its efficiency and reliability, as well as help determine its price. It could be put into production within the next two years
Chris Ambler, chief executive of Jersey Electricity, said: ‘The electric vehicle represents a significant opportunity for an Island like Jersey and is a step closer to being a very practical reality.’
