Turn the old JCG into flats, says minister

THE former Jersey College for Girls should be turned into flats, and States offices should be at the Esplanade Quarter, says the Environment Minister.

Senator Freddie Cohen announced his ideas at the Institute of Directors’ lunch on Tuesday, when he also said that the north of town had been neglected because attention had been focused on the Esplanade Quarter at the Waterfront.

Senator Cohen revealed that he had commissioned an architectural masterplan for the area. He also backed plans to renovate the old JCG into flats. ‘As part of the regeneration of the north of the town, I hope we will soon see the implementation of proposals for the site penned by Marcus Binney and Kit Martin,’ he said.

‘The north section has a significant number of sites in play. The town park site, the gasworks site, the Ann Street brewery site, the Le Masurier’s site, the Odeon, Salisbury Crescent, Ann Court, Wesley Chapel and others are all in a tightly defined area. Development of these sites on an ad hoc basis will be a disaster and will not lead to a regenerated north of town.’
