Driving off quickly is bad for your engine

From Daclino Fernandes.

A MORE for Your Money campaign tip (4 February) advises motorists to ‘. . . drive away immediately if starting from cold as trying to heat the engine wastes fuel and causes rapid engine wear’. What?

The fuel issue I agree with, although it is only marginal, but to say that it ’causes rapid engine wear’ is mad. One of the problems with the short distances in Jersey is that no one really bothers to warm cars up.

As soon as they start the engine they drive off, and I can tell you for a fact that this causes ‘rapid engine wear’.

This is not good advice for the longevity of the car’s engine. Ask any half-decent mechanic or engineer and he will tell you the same.
