From Frank Fitzpatrick.
WITH regard to the recent letter from J Apostolides (JEP, 14 February) concerning local inheritance laws, I also know of a case where a 60-year-old gentleman died unexpectedly, leaving behind his partner of 20-plus years and two children.
The gentleman had left a signed will in the house wishing for his partner and children to be the beneficiaries upon his death and died trusting that this would be the case.
However, due to the current law in Jersey, the siblings of the deceased are claiming the inheritance against the wishes of the deceased, potentially leaving the grieving partner with no savings and no home.
The partner has now lost considerable weight with the extra stress of having to unjustly fight through the courts for what is rightfully hers.
This antiquated law should be changed, and sooner rather than later.
