From Roy McCredie.
THE safest bet of the century must be that GST will increase in 2011. There never was a question of when, only of how much. General comments from our Chief Minister indicate that this is more certain than probable.
Unfortunately, Senator Ozouf in his previous position as Economics Minister cost every person in this Island dearly. His unbelievable decision to tax individual items on the shelf rather than at the till opened the door for all sorts of mark-ups and savage overpricing. When GST is increased — no ‘ifs’ — we shall have to endure the same scenario and be ripped off blind yet again.
It has been proved beyond doubt that Senator Ozouf’s chosen method of taxation was totally wrong, illogical and indefensible. His reason for doing so, given on BBC Talkback, was pathetic. This method must be reversed, whatever the cost.
The same minister seduced us into believing that a third supermarket was as good as on its way. No, I don’t think so. His categorical statement that ‘you will have another supermarket’ is as fanciful as the bridge to France or the adoption of Central European Time. Most of us know that these proposals will never happen.
These people are more than capable of producing tricks that would send Paul Daniels into raptures.
How anyone can believe one word our senior politicians utter, or be taken in by their predictions and false promises, is beyond me. I would sooner trust a rattlesnake.
