THE 60th anniversary of the modern commonwealth was marked last night at a special celebration at the Société Jersiaise Members room in Pier Road.

The Lieutenant-Governor, Andrew Ridgway, and his wife Valerie joined members of the Jersey branch of the Royal Commonwealth Association for the celebration.

And it was a special evening for the local society as prizes were presented to 16 school students whose entries for the Royal Commonwealth Society 2008 essay competition were either commended or highly commended. That is the most awarded to any region in the British Isles. Across the whole of Britain only 79 entries reached that standard.

Of the Island winners of the essay competition, eight were students at Jersey College for Girls, meaning that the school topped the table nationally for the most 2008 competition winners.
