THE father of a Jersey Royal Marine commando who died while on a training course to be part of the élite Special Boat Service is undertaking a two-month sailing trip in his memory.

Benjamin Poole was just 26 when he collapsed and died on 28 July last year while training on the Brecon Beacons, south Wales, in temperatures of more than 27°C. He had a girlfriend, Vanessa, and two brothers, Josh and Jonny.

His father, Nick Poole (54), of St Ouen, now plans to complete a sailing challenge taking in France, Spain and Portugal and finishing in Gibraltar in memory of his son, who lived in Cornwall with his girlfriend.

The sailing trip is part of the Poole family’s bid to create Challenge4Ben, an organisation that encourages people of all ages to undertake demanding personal challenges requiring commitment, courage and stamina as a way to raise funds for worthy causes, including Holidays for Heroes and Jersey Hospice Care.
