A HIGH Court bid to get Justice Secretary Jack Straw to intervene in Jersey’s child abuse inquiry was rejected in London yesterday.
Senator Stuart Syvret, along with Liberal Democrat John Hemming MP, acting under the name of Justice For Families Ltd, appeared before Lord Justice Richards sitting with Mr Justice Tugendhat in the Royal Courts of Justice. They were seeking permission to apply for a judicial review of Mr Straw’s decision not to intervene in Jersey’s child abuse inquiry by appointing UK prosecutors and judges.
The application was dismissed and Justice Richards said that the complaint should be pursued through Jersey’s own judicial system. He said he was leaving open the question of what should happen once proceedings had been through the Jersey courts, including the Jersey Court of Appeal.
With Senator Syvret and Mr Hemming in London was the Island’s former deputy police chief, Lenny Harper, who had sworn an affidavit in advance of the hearing but did not address the court.
