JERSEY’S Bedell Cristin squash players retained their inter-insular title in style on Saturday, travelling to beat Guernsey 18-12.
There was particular success for the women’s A team – Jeannie Cowie, Kate Cadigan, Ronnie Jubb, Sarah Taylor and Olivia French – who had not won their trophy since 2001, but who pulled off a clean sheet of wins to take the group 5-0.
And in the men’s A both Mark Le Roux, at No 4, and Rob Hickling, at No 3, made dramatic comebacks from games they looked set to lose to help the team to a 4-1 win. Le Roux found himself match ball down in the third to Guernsey’s Steve Le Ray but incredibly saved three match points to take the game from 8-3 down, going on to win the match 3-2.
Similarly Jersey captain Hickling looked to be struggling as he went down 2-1 and was losing 6-3 in the fourth game to Guernsey’s director of squash Ben Rosec, but he went on to win the match 3-2.
But the same wasn’t to be for Jersey’s No 1, and former world No 14, Nick Taylor who lost to the current world No 53 Chris Simpson in straight games 3-0.
