Red card for Muratti?

ONE of the Channel Islands’ oldest and most famous sporting trophies may have to be renamed because of new anti-smoking regulations.

The Muratti Vase, the prize for the annual football competition between Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney, could be red-carded for good because Muratti is a tobacco product manufacturer.

New draft regulations drawn up by Health call for all tobacco advertising and branding to be banned. The proposals recently received the overwhelming support of Islanders in a consultation exercise.

However, no one had pointed out to Health the effect a ban might have on the Muratti Vase. And a exemption might have to be put into a new law so that the name can remain legal.
