Travel insurance

From A Sowman.

THERE is an old Lancashire saying that goes ‘Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face’, and this is exactly what Jersey has done by withdrawing health cover for visitors.

Like myself and my wife the majority of visitors to Jersey are elderly and most of the elderly have something medically wrong with them.

The travel insurance game is now a very expensive minefield for the elderly. To give you an example, my wife and I are both 76 with medical history and our average annual European travel insurance has been between £800 and £1,000.

This year we have been quoted £1,077, so we have opted for the single-trip option, which will cost us on average £160 for each two weeks we are away, for possibly four trips during the next 12 months.

In the past we have had the peace of mind that we wouldn’t have to call on our insurance for any medical care in Jersey. Now, like every other visitor, we will, adding greatly to the ever-increasing bills.
