SENIOR officers at the Environment department have rejected claims that hazardous waste is seeping into the sea from the incinerator pit at La Collette.

Environment campaigners Save Our Shoreline took pictures of the incinerator pit, which is being excavated for the foundations of the new energy-from-waste plant, filled up with sea water.

They feared that water was coming into the pit and that toxic ash was being released back into the sea when the tide goes out.

However, Willie Peggie, assistant director of Environmental Protection, has strongly refuted these claims.
