JERSEY will attempt to keep its population below 100,000 after ministers revised immigration targets following strong opposition from Islanders.
Earlier this year, Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur revealed that immigration targets could increase the population to over 96,000 by 2035.
And he later sparked fierce reaction after admitting that the targets – contained in the first draft of the Strategic Plan – could even cause the population to soar to 100,000.
But today, as the plan was officially lodged with the States, Senator Le Sueur said that the targets had been revised following comments received from Islanders and new information from the UK Government Actuary’s Department that people will live even longer than originally thought.
