JERSEYS public sector workers should not get a pay rise this year, Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf has said.
Speaking at a Corporate Services Scrutiny panel meeting this week, the minister warned that workers should expect ‘nothing more than a pay freeze’ when discussing settlements for 2009/10.
He said that States workers had to be realistic in a time of deepening economic uncertainty when firms in the private sector were continuing to impose pay freezes.
After the meeting, he added: ‘There is no easy solution, but people have got to ask themselves whether they would prefer that jobs were trimmed or people take a pay freeze. I believe that they would prefer the pay freeze option.’
