An Island-wide festival will be declared on Sunday to prevent stores across the Island losing two days’ trade at the weekend.
A ministerial order was issued yesterday to declare 10 May a festival. Retailers who want to open will still have to gain permission from their parish, but it is believed that the Island’s 12 Constables have indicated that this will not be unreasonably withheld.
The ministerial order was issued by Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean, who has asked the Constables to take the Fête de la Liberation into account when making a decision on whether or not to give consent for businesses to trade.
Stores will be expected to indicate how they are going to enter into the spirit of the Liberation festival to secure permission.
