But the prison’s annual report says that almost 100 prisoners – just over half of the average population – are still ‘slopping out’ their cells, including offenders as young as 15.
New cell blocks are due to open by the end of the year, but even then some prisoners will still not have direct access to toilets from their cells.
Assistant Home Affairs Minister Jackie Hilton has welcomed the report, saying that the extra funding is providing new accommodation, five education tutors and two teaching staff at HMP La Moye, and that it is making a huge difference to inmates’ lives.
