The Constable of St Martin, Silva Yates, grew so sick of motorists speeding through his parish that he asked his honorary officers to put up their own home-made signs.
With messages like Police Speed Check and Police Radar Checks, they have appeared in verges from St Catherine’s to Durrell.
However, it appears that the officers forgot to check one detail: the law. Under the terms of the Road Traffic Law 1956 and Road Traffic Signs (Jersey) Order 1968, all road signs have to comply with a detailed set of criteria, including size and colour.
The Transport Minister is the only person with the authority to depart from the highly prescriptive legal requirements, as he has discretionary powers to allow non-standard signs to be used.
Mr Jackson said that he was unaware of the signs but would now ask some ‘discreet questions’ of the St Martin Constable.
