THE Jersey Weekly Post of 2 April stated: ‘Every Islander made redundant following collapse of their firm will be guaranteed compensation now that the States have agreed to fund notice period payments.’
Your readers would be interested to know that in Canada the Federal Government has an employment insurance programme that covers employees in ten provinces and three territories. The employees pay 1.73% of their pay and the employers pay 2.42% of their employees’ pay to the Employment Insurance Fund bi-weekly.
Employees have to work a minimum of 20 weeks or 600 hours to qualify for insurance benefits in British Columbia. At present, the criteria for benefits vary from province to province. The employees can obtain 55% of their pay up to a maximum of $447 weekly.
Also, the Jersey Weekly Post of 9 April stated: ‘GST to stay on food and fuel.’ Your readers would be interested to know that in Canada, which has both federal and provincial GST (5% and 7%), food and children’s clothing have never been taxed anywhere in the country.
One would think that States Members would have some compassion for seniors and families on limited budgets who have children to clothe and feed.
