Carl’s boxing blog: Week 2

SINCE my last post I have discovered what it feels like to be hit in the face.

Not since my last fight in my school playground have I experienced that sensation. But, to be honest, it isn’t that bad when in the boxing ring.

Okay, I was wearing protective head gear, a gum shield and my sparring partner had gloves on his fists, but it was not as painful as I thought it would be.

Yes, it’s only the second week, and I’m quite sure that all the punches will get harder as we go along, but it’s certainly not what I had expected it to be after watching all of the recent re-runs of Eubank versus Benn on ESPN Classics last week.

But I have to say that the strangest sensation this week, as we begun to spar for the first time, was to actually – and quite intentionally – want to hit someone else in the face.

The group of us have become almost team mates, working together to reach a final goal –the big charity fight night in July. But to actually try and hit your newest friend in the face or head is so hard….that is until he hits you there first!

However, it wouldn’t be right to post this blog and not mention our Sunday morning session – our weekly fitness-based encounter with near death.

What started out as a reasonably paced jog around Havre de Pas turned into the nightmare of hill sprints up a path to the back of the Fort’s now empty swimming pool.

Sprint after sprint after sprint.

It had a lot of us on our knees by the end – but that was also down to Ben Murray, who decided that it would be a good idea to thrash the lot of us with a drill of 20 press-up and 20 sit-ups as a warm down!

Now his dad Allan has returned from holiday, Ben can concentrate on his own up-coming fight and let his dad beast us instead.

Allan seems a nice guy, a really nice guy. Don’t you Allan? Yes, that’s right, you’re really nice….too nice to take us near that hill again on Sunday aren’t you?
