The fencers, who will come from all over the Commonwealth, including South Africa, New Zealand and Singapore, will vary in age from one who will celebrate her 40th birthday, the minimum age for the competition, on the opening day to an 81-year-old.

The event, which will also feature four local fencers, will take place at Fort Regent on 10-12 July and spectators are strongly encouraged.

The 102 fencers so far confirmed will include many former world champions and they will compete in three age groups in the three weapons; sabre, foil and epee, as well as in a team relay event.

According to organiser Martha Bernstein, the event is a big deal for Jersey. ‘Jersey has a very small fencing community and for us to be able to take on such a big competition and hopefully do it well is great,’ she said.
