The bright orange and blue £2.7million St Helier lifeboat, which will be a beacon of hope to those in trouble at sea, was escorted into the harbour by a flotilla of boats including Alexander Coutanche, the lifeboat she is replacing, the inshore lifeboat David Page, the States tug and pilot boats.

The boat is named George Sullivan after the main benefactor, and among those watching her arrival was Eve Hemmings, who with her husband Grand National winner Trevor Hemmings, had donated £50,000 towards its cost.

‘It was very emotional watching the new lifeboat appear with all of the other boats – it made a lovely spectacle,’ she said.
