SO the Jersey kangaroo court is at it again! While driving without insurance and with an incorrect insurance disc merits a fine of £600, being drunk and disorderly merits a fine of £150 and forging prescriptions merits a 12-month probation order and 50 hours’ community service (JEP 20 May), it is impossible for the Magistrate’s Court to rule on the heinous crime committed by Deputies Southern and Pitman of helping aged, infirm and incapable people of exercising their democratic right to vote.
The matter is so serious, so outrageous, so criminal that it gave the boys in the Royal Court a field day, a chance to annihilate, humiliate and destroy good, upstanding, decent, honest members of the States with utterly ludicrous fines.
They didn’t commit fraud, they didn’t forge signatures, there is no evidence to suggest that they manipulated the people concerned in any way. So what have they been fined for?
If the States introduce new laws they have to make sense, and they have to confirm to human rights legislation. If Deputies Southern and Pitman choose to appeal against this crazy judgment of fines of £10,000 and £2,000 respectively all the way to Strasbourg, there is little chance that the judgment will be upheld.
It is absolutely disgusting that the Royal Court misuses, abuses and manipulates the law to suit itself to try to destroy solid citizens of this Island just because their faces do not fit and they do not toe the party line.
Deputies Southern and Pitman should have been given a rap over the knuckles. Now they must fight it all the way.
