Democracy simply does not work without transparency

From Gino Risoli.

DEPUTY Paul Le Claire’s amendment to the Strategic Plan takes unprecedented steps towards a government of transparency. Every sitting Member without exception voted for the amendment. This huge step forward is imperative so that efficiencies can be made as soon as possible.

All government is an asset owned by its people. People who do work for the government as well as companies who supply services to the government are doing business with the people of Jersey, and as such, the people have the absolute right to this information.

I would suggest that the IT department get to grips with automatically putting the States’ spending online in its detail. This has already been achieved in several American states and will become law in every state.

Information is that which enables us to change our minds. It helps us to grow, it is how societies grow, and it is a necessary part of human evolution.

Without transparency, evolution becomes distorted and democracy cannot function properly. Most of all, without transparency men, women, and children cannot achieve their full potential, and that is a crime.
