IT was a pleasant surprise to read the Jersey Weekly Post (14 May) and learn that the States’ Privileges and Procedures had shown courage and leadership by recommending that in future the States’ unicameral chamber would only have one class of politician – all Deputies.
The elimination of two classes of politician in the same chamber is long overdue and the change will bring true democratic governance to Jersey in the 21st century.
One can only hope that the majority of Members in the States will vote in favour of the recommended changes and show as much leadership and vision for Jersey as their colleagues on Privileges and Procedures.
