Let’s help people to learn a trade

From Brian Hotton.

THROUGH Economic Development and Jersey Enterprise we have recently had ‘speed dating’ for local businesses held at Hotel de France at great expense.

Maybe Senator Maclean could arrange musical chairs at the same venue for the post of Chief Minister. I realise that this may be a bit problematic in that there may be some dodging about, side-stepping, crowding out and avoiding, but it should still be given a chance.

Then the public will be able to see for themselves who is fleet of foot and good at side-stepping the issues, and who gains the chair.

After all, if the Island is going to waste money, we should all be able to have a laugh, as it is about the only thing that is free at the moment and in these dark times a good laugh is essential.

Now to something a bit more serious. If Economic Development has money to spare, then Senator Maclean should consider spending it on training youngsters in some trade or other.

The millions that it costs to run Jersey Enterprise should be used for training 14- to

19-year-olds who do not wish to go into finance and the allied industries, and at the same time should subsidise apprenticeships.

Every penny spent on helping these youngsters will be money saved elsewhere in the future. We have the Jersey Business Venture, which I am sure is better equipped to help local businesses than Jersey Enterprise.
