Gavin Carter was forced to withdraw from his men’s doubles match against Menorca yesterday morning with a back injury – but after hours spent in the medical room he returned to court in dramatic fashion, just when his teammates needed him the most.
Team manager Ian Coombs-Goodfellow said: ‘We lost against Menorca 3-2, during which Gavin went off and had all sorts of treatments, so he wasn’t available to play in our next matches, against the Faroe Islands, and the Faroes turned out to be really tough. I’d say they are the favourites to win now.
‘We lost against them 4-1, with our only win coming in the mixed doubles, through Kim Ashton and Chris Cotillard. So having lost our first two matches, that meant, at that stage, that it was pretty much all over for our medal prospects – but then Gavin came back.
‘To stand our only chance of progressing to the finals, we now had to beat Guernsey, which we did, 3-2, and then it went to countback – and we came second on countback, so we’re in the finals!’
