Sunday trading ‘should be simpler’

The new draft Shops (Regulation of Opening and Deliveries) law was lodged last week by Economic Development and is due for debate by the States in September.

Although retailers will be pleased to see the ending of the restrictive list which prohibits the sale of certain items on Sundays (including Bibles), they are concerned that the powers of the 12 parish Constables will still be paramount under the new rules.

The problem is that some Constables are more prepared than others to allow Sunday opening.

Kevin Keen, who heads the Jersey Chamber of Commerce retail committee, said the powers of the Constables was ‘quite a big concern’ because of the inconsistency between the parishes.
