THE third of Islanders who live in rented accommodation will have new protection under a law passed by the States yesterday.
But despite the approval of the Draft Residential Tenancy Law, the Housing Department were criticised in the House for being too slow to act in providing basic safeguards.
The new law, brought to the States by Assistant Housing Minister Deputy Sean Power, marks one of the biggest shake-ups in housing laws in several years.
It will require tenants and landlords to give written notice to quit premises, require residential tenancy agreements to be shared between parties and could lead eventually to a deposit protection scheme.
