But Allan Quémard, whose start to the event held such great promise, lost his last group game to Oabona Motladiile, from Botswana, and crashed out in the quarter finals to the Scottish champion Wayne Hogg.

Greechan finished her group campaign with a well-deserved 10-8, 12-7 straight sets win over South African champion Estelle Herzenberg, and earned a place in the last eight.

Her Kiwi opponent admitted she had taken her time to get used to the heavy UK greens, but was in good form by the time she reached the quarter finals, so it was a feather in Greechan’s cap when she took the first set, 7-5.

Wightman took command in the second set, and earned a tiebreak with a convincing 10-2 return – and looked the likely winner when she scored two shots on the first end of the best-of-three-ends decider.
