Internships: Students still on books for summer work

Of around 120 undergraduates who have registered for the summer scheme, there are up to 60 who have not yet been allocated placements but are still keen to gain summer work experience.

The scheme, which has been running for three years now, provides employers who take on a student with a grant of £125 a week for up to eight weeks.

However, the firm must show that the work they provide is ‘challenging and meaningful’ so that the students also benefit from their time in the world of ‘real’ work.

Tim Crowley at La Mare Wine Estate, who is taking two undergraduates, said: ‘Personally I found the scheme of great assistance, in terms of both grant assistance and, more importantly, in finding candidates to suit our business needs.
