Three points clear going into the final event, the CI team needed a second place finish in the medley relay to ensure the overall win but bettered that requirement to win the event and take the Cup five points clear of nearest rivals Blackheath and Bromley.
Competing against club’s ranked higher in the league, the win was an important one for the CI team but one which they had always known they could achieve, according to coach Andrew Winnie.
‘When we got there we recognised a few faces – including quite a few GB internationals – and it became clear that the clubs were pulling out all the stops,’ he said. ‘Blackheath and Bromley, who rarely have all their best athletes out, had all the big guns out. But the conditions were perfect and in the end it was a pretty exciting day. You get a big adrenaline surge but now I am just thinking about the final league match in two weeks’ time.’
