Festival of Speed

It was the ninth year that the Classic and Vintage Motor Racing Club of Jersey have organised the event and racers enjoyed testing their machines in sprints on the Five Mile Road and on hill climbs at Grève de Lecq.

Publicity officer for the club, Neil Wakeling, said that the three-day event was enjoyed by everyone who took part. ‘It was our most successful one yet,’ he said. ‘We had a record number of entries for the events including a lot of visitors from Guernsey and the UK.’

More than 80 cars and motorbikes were involved in the festival as enthusiasts from all the Chanel Islands and the UK took the chance to show off some meticulously maintained classic vehicles. The warm weather allowed for good grip during the events and helped several riders break records or personal bests.

‘The weather was perfect,’ Mr Wakeling said. ‘The track was also good and that combination enabled people to go much quicker. We also had excellent help from the parish officials who helped it to run smoothly.’

The fastest car driver over the weekend was Stephen Leonard, driving a Mark 2 Ford Escort, who recorded a time of 35.20 seconds. ‘He was absolutely spectacular,’ Mr Wakeling added. ‘He was completely in control of his vehicle.’
