With the debate on next year’s spending plans and the controversial cuts package just over a fortnight away, the Senator has e-mailed all States Members, saying that anyone seeking to oppose ministerial plans should consider the example of the Caribbean islands.
The Guardian has reported that the economy of the Cayman Islands is effectively on its knees, with an ‘alarming black hole’ in its finances.
Ministers there have reportedly been refused a £190m bailout loan from the UK government and have been told to consider levying new taxes instead.
And last month they had to suspend payments into pensions, health insurance and scheduled payments to contractors in order to pay wages to public sector staff.
