Delhi on full alert

That is the feedback from Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey secretary general Alan Cross who got a glimpse into protection levels following a recent visit to Delhi.

Cross said: ‘Security was on full alert throughout the visit with all official Games vehicles having armed police outriders and the Delhi traffic being brought to a standstill during the time of delegates’ movements around the city.

‘There is a general concern for safety in developing countries after things like the attacks in Mumbai and the concern at the World Badminton Championships (held in India’s Hyderabad) when England returned home following threats.

‘Following these they stepped up security and the Commonwealth Games Federation has spent quite a bit of money engaging international security agencies so I think that the competitors will notice the extra police and army around the place, more so than in Melbourne.’
