The Fire and Rescue Service have given their backing to the new safety equipment after revealing that about 70 house fires a year occur in the Island.

Dorest Fire and Rescue Service watch manager Steve Underhill has been in the Island to demonstrate to local architects and builders how effective the sprinklers are in extinguishing house fires.

In a demonstration, an armchair was set on fire in front of an invited audience and the sprinkler system put the blaze out in under ten seconds.

Mr Underhill said that the drive to get householders installing sprinklers came after Dorset firefighters had to deal with 13 deaths last year.
