Post haste from times past

From Terry Connor.

MR Martin Summers’s letter (JEP, 21 October) on his (unusual) speedy encounter with the mail service to and from Edinburgh prompted my reminiscence of days gone by before the expensive sorting machinery (et al) was installed to deal with and speed up mail processing.

In the immediate post-war period we enjoyed morning as well as afternoon manual ‘door delivery’ even in the wilds of Pontac; and in 1959 an ‘Air Letter’ posted by my mother here in the local village post box reached me in my apartment in Montreal just 36 hours later.
