Health officials said yesterday that the number of cases confirmed last week had risen dramatically to 119 – 85 more than the 34 of the week before.

Children continue to be the worst affected, with several schools starting to see a rise in cases.

It was announced this morning that pupils at Plat Douet School were the latest to be offered Tamiflu after a case was confirmed there.

In a statement released yesterday afternoon, Health said that 50% of swabs taken from suspected swine flu patients were now being confirmed as positive.

Eight out of ten of those were children.

Consultant microbiologist Dr Ivan Muscat, who is an expert in communicable diseases, will be leading the control of the outbreak.
